Reading Week Day 4!

One of Dr. Seuss's most famous books is Green Eggs & Ham.  So today in honor of Dr. Seuss we thought green & wore green.  Our classroom was full of green today!! :)  We continued to have a lot of different mystery readers today & we also had a lot of treats throughout the day - yum! yum! :)  Tomorrow's dress up day is Flannel PJ Friday so students can wear flannel or PJ's or a combination.  :)

Mystery Readers

Our first mystery reader was Aidan W.'s mom (Mrs. Wehmeyer).  She read two of Aidan's favorite books The Thank You Book and Pete the Cat and the Bad Banana.

Samuel's brother, Seth, was our second mystery reader, and he read to us Bear Says Thanks.  He brought in donut holes for us to enjoy as an early morning snack!

On Tuesday & Thursday mornings, we have students from MU that help in our classroom.  Today Ms. Guillory and Ms. Moore were both mystery readers this morning!  They read When I Grow Up and The Princess and the Pony.

We had counselor today, but before counselor started Mr. Smith was our next mystery reader.  He read the book Let Me Finish!

After lunch, Ben's mom & grandmother (Mrs. Price) came to be our sixth mystery reader.  Mrs. Price read Dragons Love Tacos, and what better to go with the the book was a taco from Taco Bell.  We found out the second graders love tacos also!!

Mrs. Richardson (previous 4th & 5th grader teacher, currently teaches ELL) was our seventh mystery reader.  She read A Fish Out of Water to us.

Our last mystery reader was a surprise!  Jameson had his birthday over the weekend and so his mom surprised him with being our last mystery reader of the day!! :)  Jameson and his mom read The Book With No Pictures together.  Afterwards, we sang "Happy Birthday" to Jameson and enjoyed cupcakes.

Mother Singers

Today we celebrated America with the Mother Singers!  They sang us several songs about the love of America and important songs throughout American history.

Counselor

Today, Mr. Smith continued teaching about what to do when a situation occurs that maybe unsafe.  First, we need to recognize if the situation is unsafe, refuse if it is unsafe and then report to a trusted adult.  We also had a conversation about wanted and unwanted touches.  We talked that it is okay to tell someone that you don't like an unwanted touch, and then to report an unwanted touch to a trusted adult.  The kiddos brainstormed trusted adults (both at home & at school) on a sheet of paper - this paper came home in your child's backpack.

Weather

Earlier today the weather was beautiful.  This afternoon the rain came in & a cold front will be following.  Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather tomorrow.

Reading Week Day 3!

What a wonderful Wednesday that we had!  Our dress-up theme today was Who's Who Wednesday.  Can you guess who all these kiddos are dressed up as?

Even the teachers got in on the fun!  Can you identify all the characters?  :)

Mystery Readers

Today, we had several mystery readers!  Our first mystery reader was Adam's mom (Mrs. Link).  She brought in yummy donut holes for us to enjoy as she read two books to us: Leonardo the Terrible Monster and Old Granny and the Bean Thief.

Chance & Luci's dad surprised them as our second mystery reader of the day!  He read two Eric Carle classics: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Quiet Cricket.  To keep with the animal/insect theme the other book Mr. Gillion read was A Duck So Small.

Our third mystery reader was Quentin's mom (Mrs. Lea) and she also read two books.  The first book was Socks for Supper, and while the kiddos listened to this book they enjoyed fruit snacks.  The second book Mrs. Lea read was Round Trip.  This is a really neat book and had a special surprise in the middle - ask your kiddo what surprised them or what was special about this book.

Caitlin's mom (Mrs. Bond) was our fourth mystery reader today.  She read to us Frankenstein and Madeline.

After lunch, we had several mystery readers!  First, Aiden T.'s mom surprised him by coming in and reading Bartholomew and Oobleck.  The moral of the story was the importance of saying sorry.

On Wednesdays, we are lucky enough to have three college students that spend the day with us!  Today each of them read a book.  Ms. Maher read Miss Nelson is Back, a book that she read a lot as a kid.  Ms. Meyer read Nana in the City, and Ms. Herndon read My School is a Zoo.

Writing & Reading

Today we worked hard on our second reason paragraph of our opinion writing.  We focused on making sure that our conclusion sentence was summing an opinion versus summing up an informational piece of writing.  When we wrote informational writing, we used a conclusion sentence like, "Now you know all about ____."  We worked on writing an opinion conclusion sentence that is similar to, "The reason why ____ is a great place to live is because ___."  The students did a great job with this!!!

At the end of the day, the kiddos enjoyed being able to either read or write.  We had kiddos working on some really fun books that were either inspired by books that they have read or from their own ideas.  Just look at how hard all them were working!!!

Tomorrow's Read Week dress-up day is Think Green in honor of Green Eggs & Ham - so dec your child out in green from their head to their toes tomorrow!!!  Have a wonderful evening & I hope that you get a chance to get out & enjoy this beautiful weather!
