Making Fossils Pictures

We had a wonderful time "making fossils."  We have learned about different types of fossils.  We learned about amber and how it is formed when sap drips down a tree and bugs or leaves get stuck.  We used jello with a raisin inside to represent our amber.  We also talked about cast and mold fossils with the jello.  The cup was the mold and the jello was the cast.  Then the students were able to "dig for bones" as they tried to get chocolate chips out of the cookies.  They had an absolute blast with the fossils today and were able to explain the different ways fossils were formed.

The students were watching the clock as we made the Jello.  They had to let me know when 2 minutes had passed.
Our trays of "amber" all ready to harden up in the fridge.

Here are some pictures of the kids excavating the "bones" from the "dirt."

Some "amber" after it came out of the mold.  The jello worked really well to teach about amber, but also to teach about casts and molds.  The bottom of the jello was the exact same as the bottom of the container it set it.  It had the ridges and numbers, just like the container.
