We took a lot of pictures today for Dot Day. It was a wonderful day full of fun STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math activities). Enjoy all the pictures! :)
We started our day out by making a Dot Day Snack and creating dots for the banner for the firefighters.
Here is their CoLAR dot that we used with the app, check out the video to see how they used the iPads with their dots.
A yummy dot day snack!
Here is our banner for the firefighters.
The students decorated Dot cookies. They made one for themselves and one for the firefighters.
Here is the completed plate of cookies for the firefighters.
The students estimated how many Dot candies were in the jar. They used a strategy of counting how many were on the bottom, then counting how many "layers" there were in the jar. The estimated there were 8 layers of 17, so a total of 136 Dots in the jar. There were 200 Dots, but then they divided the dots into 10 groups and figured out that was 20 Dots in each group. A lot of math going on for sure! Then they used the Dot candies, marshmallows and tooth picks to create the tallest fire tower possible for Firefighter Bob.
The pictures below are their engineering activity for the day. They had Dot candies, marshmallows and toothpicks to create a fire tower for Firefighter Bob.
The fabulous firefighters, Tony, Paul and Greg, from Station 7 came to talk to use today. We had cookies and a poster for them as a thank you for all the ways they make their mark on the world.
The fire truck pulling away. They had to leave because they got a call, so we were able to see the lights and hear the sirens.
All of 2nd grade celebrated Dot Day today
