I hope you have all had a wonderful day! I took some fun pictures and had some information to share today. :)
Math "Test" Tomorrow
Just a reminder that we have our math "test" over addition and subtraction strategies tomorrow. We reviewed all the strategies with the students today. I took pictures of the smartboard so you can see everything they have been working on in class. :) We discussed word problems, fact families, part-part-whole, commutative property, tally marks, pictures and number lines. On each picture, it shows an example and also if it is a strategy used for addition, subtraction or both.
After we reviewed all the strategies, the students learned some math games. They learned dice addition and addition war. Directions for the games are here. They can also be found under the homework tab.
Slinky People
In reading this week, we have been learning about different character traits and how to use the actions of the characters to describe a character. Today, they chose 7 character traits about themselves and then created a "slinky person" that showed the 7 character traits. We will continue working on character traits through our read aloud as well as in our personal narratives.
Spelling Test
As a reminder, we have our first spelling test tomorrow. The words are where, there, come, would, many, friend, another, very, they and people. I will send home next week's words in a blog post tomorrow.
STEAM Club
Ms. Mottaz and I will be starting a STEAM Club this month. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math and each month we will focus on a different part of STEAM and have a fun activity. In your student's Friday folder is a permission slip for the STEAM Club. It is going home to all 2nd grade students, but we currently only have room for 40 students, so if your student is interested, please make sure to get the form filled out and sent back on Monday. Again, the permission slip will be in your student's Friday folder.
College Sports Day!
Tomorrow is our first spirit day of the year. It is College Sports Day, so if your student would like to participate, have them wear their favorite college sports' team colors or jersey or t-shirt. It is always fun to see everyone's favorite teams!
Outdoor Classroom
We went to the outdoor classroom today during writing. We have been working on creating descriptive settings this week. The students had to use 4 of their 5 senses (we didn't use taste) to describe what was in the outdoor classroom. They did a very nice job describing it using their senses. I have been very impressed with the discussions we have had about settings and why it is important to have a descriptive setting.
Homework
As a reminder, homework will start next week. I will go over the homework with the students on Tuesday morning. Please let me know if you have any questions about the homework.
Have a wonderful evening!
Mrs. Ross
